Being outside can make you healthy and happy! Recent studies have shown that being outdoors improves your mood, reduces stress, boosts the immune system and increases proteins that can fight off illness and disease.
Getting some natural light and fresh air benefits both the mind and body whether you’re at the beach, in the woods, in green open space or even walking through the city. Being around nature in particular provides a calming effect and when combined with exercise it can reduce anxiety and help keep depression at bay.
Due to the pandemic many of us have spent much more time outdoors, as our gyms have been closed, restaurants and cafes stopped serving customers inside and we have been confined to our homes except for exercise just once a day. As restrictions are lifted, we have all realised the benefits of being outside and this looks set to continue over the months ahead.
Being outside has some incredible health benefits:
Lowers stress – spending time walking and seeing nature can lower your blood pressure and reduce cortisol and adrenaline, two stress-related hormones.
Improves mood – being around nature can make you happy and less anxious.
Improves focus – studies have shown that adults and children who have difficulties focusing are able to concentrate after they have been in an outdoor natural environment. It has also been shown to reduce symptoms of attention deficit disorder.
Improves healing – illness can increase stress but research has shown that patients who have been outside heal quicker, required less pain relief and experienced fewer complications.
Slows the signs of ageing – according to a study in the Journal of Aging and Health, adults who were over 70 and spent time outside experienced fewer difficulties in sleeping and complained less about aches and pains. They also reported improved mobility.
