The weather and hectic nature of this time of year can make moving home all the more stressful and daunting. However, a bit of pre-planning will see you in good stead. Here are some points to consider when moving home in winter.
Get organised
Everything and everyone seems to get busier at this time of year, especially around the festive period, so make sure to book professional removers as far in advance as possible. If you’re doing a DIY move, consider how much busier your ‘go to’ helpers will likely be, being tied to festive commitments or away on holiday, so get requests in early. Same goes for starting your packing – making use of the limited daylight at this time of year will mean you might need a few extra days to get it all done, so the more organised you are the better.
Protect belongings
When packing, consider how protected your belongings will be if the weather doesn’t cooperate on move day. Cardboard boxes without lids for example won’t be watertight. Using blankets, plastic sheets and plastic boxes will be best for keeping your items safe. Removals companies should come prepared if you are using one. If you have difficult to move items, or things you don’t want exposed to the elements such as a piano, make a specific plan for these. Protect the flooring of both your old and new homes by using plastic sheets or cardboard boxes underfoot.
Keep weather savvy
When it comes to move day, you’ll be spending a lot of time carting things outdoors, so it makes sense to dress appropriately in layers and sturdy footwear. If it’s frosty or snowing, a hat and gloves, especially the type with grips, are essential too. People tend to rush around on move day as there is always so much to get done, so it becomes really important to clear pathways of slippery snow/ice, leaves and debris and consider putting down some salt or grit. Be prepared for icy conditions on the roads too, keeping up to date with traffic alerts and make sure you’re on top of vehicle safety checks. If there are severe weather conditions, thought disappointing, it may be worth rescheduling. It’s worth keeping flexible with plans at this time of year.
Keep warm
Pack the kettle last, and open it first in your new place, in order to keep teas and coffees on supply and help heat up cold bodies and ensure people grab quick breaks. Get the heating on once you arrive at your new place too and check all the radiators are on. Keeping comfortable and as cosy as possible will make all the difference to your winter move.
