Pinterest Trends – What’s New for 2019?

Over 250 million people around the world use the site to discover new ideas and it has become THE place to get inspiration for all aspects of your life. 

Pinterest will look at what people are searching for and if a search term has a steady upward trajectory for more than six months it is classed as a trend. This gives a clear indication of what people are dreaming about for the coming year. 

During a time of economic uncertainty, these ideas and trends show that we all have something in common – the desire to be more adventurous, to make our lives more comfortable and to be inspired.

Travel

Twice as many travellers use Pinterest versus online travel agency sites. The biggest trends were ‘unknown destinations’ and ‘out of the way towns’ with searches up 192% and and 276% respectively. This shows a trend for those looking to stay off the beaten track and use our valued time off work to experience new places. 

Wellness

Self care was a big health and wellness theme with a rise 140% rise in searches. The largest trends were for natural ginger in everything from oil to tea and even condiments. Ditching alcohol is always a big theme for January, and motivational quotes and non alcoholic drink ideas saw a rise of 659%.  

Hobbies

Pinterest has a whopping 8 billion hobby and interest Pins so there really is no end to the ideas available. The biggest trends were for ‘side hustles at home’ whereby people are looking to turn their passion into profit. This saw a rise of 690%. DIY acrylic painting and chalk art saw a rise of 660% and 664% respectively.  

Celebrations

Whether you need ideas for decorations, food, cake, drinks or what to wear, it’s a great place to look if you’re planning a get together. Donut decor saw a 748% rise in searches as people look for ideas for colourful, edible displays. Gold wedding gowns was a huge trend with a 1552% rise in searches and flower garlands were the decoration of choice with a 1154% rise.

Food & Drink

Food brings us all together and Pinterest has 23 billion recipes to choose from. Again, ginger made an appearance with ginger water seeing a 353% rise and homemade jam with a 829% rise. Finally, going pegan was a big trend (part vegan part paleo) had a 337% increase in searches. 

Home

Pinterest is a great place to help your house feel like a home. Contemporary fireplaces saw a rise of 763% and textile art to adorn our homes was a big trend with a search rise of 1718%. Another huge trend was for painted floor tiles with a rise of 1276%.

Beauty

This year is about mixing natural styles with gloss and colour. Pinterest is were women of all ethnicities are searching for ideas and a big trend was for lilac hair at 1077%. 

Family life

When it comes to parenting, 56% of parents on Pinterest say it’s the place that they go to learn about parenting ideas and products, and 81% say they couldn’t live without it! Stylish geometric patterns for children’s bedrooms saw a 1178% rise and searches for smart bassinets to help your baby sleep rose 851%.
